YORKVILLE MAN ARRESTED FOR SUGAR GROVE BANK ROBBERY

Robert D. Grant, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was joined today by Robert A. Porter, Chief of the Downers Grove, Illinois Police Department (DGPD) and Bradley A. Sauer, Chief of the Sugar Grove, Illinois Police Department (SGPD) in announcing the arrest of DANNY R. GROTE, age 32, whose last known address was 426 Landmark Avenue in Yorkville, Illinois.

GROTE was arrested on October 10th, without incident, by FBI Special Agents and Officers from the DGPD at the Duellman Motel, located in Downers Grove, where GROTE was staying. GROTE was arrested in connection with the October 8, 2008 robbery of the Oak Trust Credit Union, located at 80 Dugan Road in Sugar Grove.

GROTE was charged in a criminal complaint filed yesterday in U.S. District Court in Chicago with one count of Bank Robbery, which is a felony offense. According to the complaint, GROTE entered the credit union at approximately 9:30 AM and approached a teller, handing her a note announcing a robbery and demanding money. The note implied that GROTE was armed but no weapon was displayed and no injuries were reported.

After obtaining an undisclosed amount of cash, GROTE fled the bank, making his escape in an early 1990’s model, Chevrolet S-series pick-up. While the license plate number was not observed, several witnesses did get a good look at the vehicle, providing the description to responding SGPD Officers. Subsequent investigation by the FBI, DGPD and SGPD identified GROTE as the robber and he was traced to the motel in the western suburb, where he was eventually arrested.

GROTE appeared in U.S. District Court in Chicago late yesterday, at which time he was formally charged. GROTE was ordered held without bond, pending his next scheduled court appearance, and is being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in Chicago. If convicted of the charge filed against him, GROTE faces a possible sentence of up to twenty (20) years incarceration.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

EDITOR’S NOTE: A copy of the criminal complaint filed in this case is available from the Chicago FBI’s press office at (312) 829-1199.
