May 7, 2008 Robert D. Grant, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced today that a reward of up to $5,000 was being offered for information leading to the identification and arrest of the individual depicted in the attached photographs, who is believed responsible for the armed robbery of at least three (3) banks in the far western suburbs, dating to March of 2008. During the most recent robbery, which took place on March 25, 2008, at the Fifth Third Bank branch located in Elburn, Illinois, the robber entered the bank, approached a teller while brandishing a small, silver colored, semi-automatic handgun, and orally announced a robbery. He placed a backpack on the counter and demanded the teller place cash into the bag from the teller drawer. After receiving an undisclosed amount of cash, the robber fled the bank on foot. No shots were fired and no injuries were reported as a result of this robbery. This same individual is also believed to have robbed the Midwest Bank and Trust, 17622 Depot Street, Union, Illinois, on March 24, 2008, and the Castle Bank branch, 11700 S. Route 47, in Huntley, Illinois, on March 10, 2008. The robber is described as a white/male, 18 – 23 years of age, 5’3” – 5’6” tall, thin build. He has worn various hooded sweatshirts and knit caps in an effort to conceal his identity. He is being dubbed the “Backpack Bandit” as in all three robberies, he was carrying a black backpack which he used in the commission of the crimes.
