SUSPECTED SERIAL BANK ROBBER CHARGED

Robert D. Grant, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); Jody P. Weis, Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department (CPD); and Thomas Dart, Cook County Sheriff, announced today the arrest of DARRYL A. ROGERS, age 43, whose last known address was 2001 South Michigan Avenue in Chicago. ROGERS was arrested on April 30, without incident, by CPD officers from the 1st District, who responded to a suspicious person call in the 100 block of South Wacker Drive .

ROGERS was subsequently charged in a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago with one count of Bank Robbery, which is a felony offense, for the April 2, 2008 robbery of the Charter One Bank branch, located at 2 South State Street .

According to the complaint, an employee of the Charter One Bank branch, located at 71 South Wacker Drive , noticed ROGERS peering into the bank through a window. After checking a bank security notice detailing the April 2 robbery which contained a photo of the robber, the bank employee recognized ROGERS as the suspected robber. She then placed a call to the CPD via the 911 emergency number. Responding CPD officers located ROGERS seated on a bench about a block away. After discovering a handgun in his jacket pocket, he was taken into custody.

Subsequent investigation by the Chicago FBI’s Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF) developed evidence linking ROGERS to the April 2 robbery. Although charged with just one theft, ROGERS is also a suspect in the March 13, 2008 robbery of the TCF Bank Branch, located at 1 East Jackson and the

January 16, 2008 robbery of the US Bank branch, located at 209 South LaSalle Street .

In announcing this arrest, Mr. Grant wants to commend the alert bank employee for providing the information that led to the apprehension of a suspected serial robber. “Cooperation from the public has always been an essential element of effective law enforcement. With the arrest that was announced today, this has once again proven to be true,” said Mr. Grant.

ROGERS appeared before Magistrate Judge Morton Denlow on May 1, at which time he was formally charged. ROGERS is being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in Chicago , pending his next scheduled court appearance.

The Chicago FBI’s VCTF is comprised of FBI Special Agents, Detectives from the CPD and Investigator s from the Cook County Sheriff’s Police Department.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

EDITOR’S NOTE: A copy of the complaint filed in this case is available from the Chicago FBI’s press office at (312) 829-1199.
