CHARGES
FILED IN MONDAY’S TCF BANK
ROBBERY
Robert
D. Grant, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal
Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was joined by Patrick J. Fitzgerald, United
States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, in announcing
today the filing of criminal charges against the individual suspected
of robbing a north side TCF Bank branch Monday morning and who subsequently
attempted to run down an FBI Agent while being arrested.
STEVEN D. BOYD, age 27, whose last known address is 1633 East
93rd Street in Chicago, was charged in a criminal complaint filed yesterday in
U.S. District Court in Chicago with one count of Bank Robbery, which is a felony
offense. The complaint alleges that BOYD committed the armed robbery of
the TCF Bank branch, located at 4355 North Sheridan Road on Monday, December
15th.
According to the complaint, BOYD entered the bank around
9:30 AM, approached a teller and handed her a note announcing a robbery and demanding
money. In the note, the robber claimed to be armed and threatened the bank
employee with harm, if his demands were not met. After receiving approximately
$1200 in cash, BOYD fled the bank of foot, out of site of witnesses.
Members of the Chicago FBI’s Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF)
responded to the robbery and began an extensive investigation. Approximately
one hour later, VCTF members spotted BOYD apparently waiting for a bus in the
700 block of North Michigan Avenue. As VCTF members approached, BOYD attempted
to flee and was apprehended a short distance away after a brief foot chase.
While in the process of being taken into custody, BOYD managed to gain
access to an FBI vehicle and subsequently attempted to run down one of the arresting
FBI Agents with the car. A second FBI Special Agent, fearing for his partner’s
safety, fired one round from his service weapon into the vehicle striking BOYD
in the chest.
BOYD was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his wound
and was subsequently released. No bystanders or FBI agents were injured during
the altercation. Investigation into the assault on the arresting agents is continuing.
BOYD appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Arlander Keys, yesterday,
at which time he was formally charged. BOYD was ordered held without bond, pending
his next scheduled court appearance. If convicted of the charge filed against
him, BOYD faces a possible sentence of up to twenty (20) years incarceration.
The Chicago FBI’s Violent Crimes Task Force is comprised of
FBI Special Agents, Detectives from the Chicago Police Department and Investigators
from the Cook County Sheriff’s Police.
The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt
and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven
guilty in a court of law.
