MEDIA ADVISORY


The Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will be hosting a memorial service tomorrow (Friday, May 11th) as part of National Police Week observances. The service will pay tribute to Special Agents of the FBI who have given their lives in the line-of-duty.

The memorial service will be hosted by Robert D. Grant, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Field Office. Bill Kurtis, president of Chicago based Kurtis Productions and former Chicago television news anchor, will serve as the keynote speaker. Members of the St. Ignatiuscollege preparatory high school choir and the Chicago Police Department's Emerald Society will also be in attendance.

To date, 35 FBI Special Agents have been killed during adversarial actions while another 16 have died during the performance of their duties. Edwin C. Shanahan of the Chicago Office was the first FBI Special Agent to die in the line-of-duty. SA Shanahan was shot to death by a suspected car thief on Chicago's south side in 1925. Three other Chicago based Special Agents, W. Carter Baum, Samuel P. Cowley and Herman E. Hollis, were killed during gunfights with bank robbers in 1934.

Four other Special Agents from the Chicago Office were killed in a plane crash in 1982. Robert C. Conners, Charles L. Ellington, Terry B. Hereford and Michael J. Lynch were transporting a prisoner in an FBI operated aircraft, which crashed while attempting to land outside of Cincinnati, Ohio.
