SUSPECTED BANK ROBBER ARRESTED ON CTA TRAIN
Robert D. Grant, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Philip J. Cline, Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department (CPD), and Thomas Dart, Cook County Sheriff announced today the arrest of PAUL MARCHIONNE, age 52, a resident of Chicago, Illinois. MARCHIONNE, who has been charged with the March 26, 2007 robbery of the Chase Bank located at 2639 North Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago, was apprehended by a CPD patrol officer shortly after the robbery. MARCHIONNE was accused in a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago with one (1) count of bank robbery, a felony offense. According to the complaint, MARCHIONNE entered the Chase Bank branch approached a teller and verbally demanded money. Although no weapon was displayed, MARCHIONNE told the teller that he had a gun pointed at her. After receiving $675.00 from the teller, MARCHIONNE placed the cash into his black book bag and fled on foot onto Milwaukee Avenue. Bank employees immediately notified CPD who sent out a radio broadcast with a description of the robber. A CPD uniformed patrol officer proceeded to the Logan Square Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) train station across the street from the bank. The patrol officer immediately noticed a man who fit the description of the bank robber carrying a black book bag and boarding a CTA blue line train that had just arrived. The officer notified the conductor to hold the train as the suspect, MARCHIONNE, took a seat aboard the train. The patrol officer approached MARCHIONNE and ordered him to raise his hands, but MARCHIONNE was unresponsive. After several requests with no response, the officer drew his weapon. MARCHIONNE then complied and exited the train as commanded by the officer. A subsequent CPD search of MARCHIONNE's bag uncovered $675. No weapon was recovered. Immediately thereafter, MARCHIONNE was positively identified as the bank robber by the victim teller. After being advised of his Miranda rights, MARCHIONNE confessed to the arresting officer that he had robbed the bank because he was "hungry and desperate." CPD's 14th District then contacted Chicago FBI who took MARCHIONNE into FBI custody where he provided a more detailed confession. On March 27, 2007, MARCHIONNE appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Nan Nolan where he was ordered to be held in federal custody pending a detention hearing scheduled for Friday, March 30, 2007 at 9:30 a.m. The Chicago FBI's Violent Crimes Task Force is comprised of FBI Special Agents, Detectives from the CPD and Investigators from the Cook County Sheriff's Department. The public is reminded that a criminal complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. EDITOR'S NOTE: A copy of the complaint filed against MARCHIONNE is available from the Chicago FBI Press Office: 312-829-1199 |
