SUSPECTED SERIAL BANK ROBBER CHARGED

Robert D. Grant, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); Philip J. Cline, Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) and Michael F. Sheahan, Cook County Sheriff announced today the arrest of STEVEN ROBINSON, age 42, whose last known address was 918 North LeClaire in Chicago. ROBINSON was arrested Monday evening, without incident, by officers of the CPD who were responding to a robbery alarm at a near north side bank.

ROBINSON was charged in a criminal complaint filed yesterday in U.S. District Court in Chicago with one (1) count of Bank Robbery, which is a felony offense. According to the complaint, ROBINSON entered the Washington Mutual Bank branch, located at 609 West North Avenue, at approximately 5:00 PM. He approached a teller and handed her a note, announcing a robbery and demanding cash. The note implied that he was armed and threatened the teller with harm, if his demands for cash were not met. While waiting to get money from the teller, a silent alarm was activated. ROBINSON was found waiting at the teller's counter when CPD Officers arrived.

ROBINSON was subsequently turned over to the Chicago FBI's Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF), who conducted additional investigation which led to the filing of the charges in this case. Although he has only been charged with the September 25th robbery, ROBINSON is suspected in as many as four (4) additional robberies of banks on the near north side, dating to August 25th of this year.

ROBINSON appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Geraldine Soat Brown in Chicago, yesterday afternoon, at which time he was ordered held without bond pending his next scheduled court appearance. If convicted of the charges filed against him, ROBINSON faces a possible sentence of up to 20 years incarceration.

The Chicago FBI's VCTF is comprised of FBI Special Agents, Detectives from the CPD and Investigators from the Cook County Sheriff's Department.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

EDITOR'S NOTE: A copy of the complaint filed against ROBINSON is available from the Chicago FBI Press Office at (312) 829-1199.
