SUSPECTED BANK ROBBER TAKEN INTO CUSTODY

Robert D. Grant, Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); Philip J. Cline, Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) and Michael F. Sheahan, Cook County Sheriff announced today the arrest of EDWARD RANDLE, age 43, who resides at 1333 N. Cleveland in Chicago. RANDLE, who has been charged with the September 14, 2006 robbery of the North Community Bank located at 3180 North Broadway in Chicago, surrendered himself to CPD's 2nd District on September 19, 2006.

RANDLE was accused in a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago with one (1) count of bank robbery, a felony offense. According to the complaint, RANDLE robbed the North Community Bank branch by placing a bag on the counter and giving the teller a note threatening a bomb and demanding money. After receiving $845.00 from the teller, the bank robber fled on foot northbound from the bank. A later review of the bag's contents did not reveal a bomb.

The complaint describes a witness who observed a man running northbound on Broadway immediately after the bank robbery took place. The witness informed the CPD officers responding to the crime that the man peeled off his jacket and t-shirt and tossed them onto the ground while he was running up the street. The CPD officers recovered the jacket and found a paycheck stub in the pocket bearing the name of EDWARD RANDLE with an address of 1333 N. Cleveland in Chicago along with a partial social security number. After viewing a photo array containing a picture of RANDLE and five other males, the victim teller identified RANDLE as the person who had robbed her earlier that day. A Federal arrest warrant was subsequently issued in U.S. District Court.

CPD officers and Special Agents from the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF) immediately began trying to locate RANDLE. Upon learning that he was being sought by law enforcement authorities, RANDLE turned himself into CPD's 2nd District located at 51st and Wentworth. The FBI and CPD are currently exploring other bank robberies in the Chicago area to determine possible links to RANDLE.
On September 20, 2006, RANDLE appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Maria Valdez where he was ordered held without bond. He remains in Federal custody.

The Chicago FBI's VCTF is comprised of FBI Special Agents, Detectives from the CPD and Investigators from the Cook County Sheriff's
Department.

The public is reminded that a criminal complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
