GANG FUGITIVE ARRESTED IN FLORIDA

Robert D. Grant, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced today the arrest of FIDEL S. HERNANDEZ, age 33, whose last known address was 2300 North Harding in Chicago. HERNANDEZ was arrested by FBI Special Agents, without incident, in Gainesville, Florida on Friday.

HERNANDEZ has been the subject of a nationwide manhunt since evading capture and fleeing from the Chicago area in December of 2004. HERNANDEZ is alleged to have been a high ranking member of the Maniac Latin Disciples street gang, which operated in and around the northwest side of Chicago. HERNANDEZ was charged, along with 18 others, in a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago with numerous violations of federal drug laws.

A reward of up to $5,000 was previously offered for information leading to the location and arrest of HERNANDEZ.

HERNANDEZ is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Gainesville, later today, at which time the government will seek to have him returned to Chicago to stand trial on the outstanding charges.

EDITOR's NOTE: Additional copies of the attached reward flyer and the criminal complaint filed in this case are available from the Chicago FBI Press Office at (312) 829-1199.
