ROLLING MEADOWS MAN ARRESTED FOLLOWING MORTON GROVE BANK ROBBERY

Robert D. Grant, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Paul L. Tasch, Jr., Chief of the Morton Grove, Illinois Police Department (MGPD) announced today the arrest of SHANNON D. BROWN, age 39, of 3702 Rywick Court in Rolling Meadows, Illinois. BROWN was arrested yesterday afternoon by Morton Grove Police Officers, who were responding to a robbery alarm at the LaSalle Bank branch, located at 8745 Waukegan Road in Morton Grove.

BROWN was subsequently turned over to FBI Special Agents and was charged in a criminal complaint filed today in U.S. District Court in Chicago with one count of bank robbery, which is a felony offense. According to the complaint, BROWN entered the LaSalle Bank branch shortly before 3:00 PM and approached a teller, handing her a note announcing a robbery. The note implied that BROWN was armed and threatened the teller with physical harm, if his demands for cash were not met.

After obtaining over $6000 in cash, BROWN fled the bank in a white van. An alert bank employee was able to obtain a description of the vehicle, which was relayed to the MGPD. Officers responding to the robbery observed the vehicle driving away from the bank and conducted a traffic stop, arresting BROWN and recovering the cash that was taken from the bank. No weapons were found and no injuries were reported.

BROWN appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Nan R. Nolan, earlier today, at which time he was ordered held without bond, pending his next scheduled court appearance. If convicted of the charges filed against him, BROWN faces a maximum sentence of up to 20 years incarceration.

In announcing this arrest, Mr. Grant wishes to recognize the Morton Grove Police Department for the prompt and professional manner in which they responded to this robbery and arrested BROWN. "The swift apprehension of this potentially dangerous individual prevented him from committing another robbery and endangering other citizens" said Grant.

The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

EDITOR's NOTE: A copy of the complaint filed against BROWN is available from the Chicago FBI Press Office at (312) 786-2645.
