March 7, 2006 TWO CHARGED IN NORTH SIDE BANK ROBBERY Robert D. Grant, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Philip J. Cline, Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) announced today the arrest of CLARENCE CAVINES, age 29, of Evanston, Illinois and RHIAN DE ARTHUR MOORE, age 18, of Chicago. Both men were taken into custody by CPD officers, who were responding to an alarm at the Chase Bank branch, located at 5134 North Clark Street in Chicago. CAVINES and MOORE were charged in a criminal complaint filed earlier today in U.S. District Court in Chicago, with one count each of bank robbery, which is a felony offense. According to the complaint, the two men entered the bank just after 10:00 AM and announced a robbery. One of the robbers was armed with a handgun and ordered customers and employees to the floor. The second robber then ordered a bank manager to open the vault and filled a plastic garbage bag with over $100,000 in currency. The two men then attempted to flee through the rear door of the bank, but their escape was blocked by a CPD patrol car that responded to the robbery alarm. The two then fled out the front door, but were observed and pursued by additional CPD Officers. Both men were apprehended within a few blocks of the bank, following a foot chase. No injuries were reported as the handgun turned out to be a toy and the plastic bag containing the bank's money was recovered. CAVINES and MOORE were subsequently turned over to the FBI and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Nan R. Nolan this afternoon, at which time they were ordered held without bond, pending their next scheduled court appearance. If convicted of the charges filed against them, both men face a possible sentence of up to twenty years incarceration. The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. EDITOR's NOTE: A copy of the complaint filed in this case is available from the Chicago FBI Press Office at (312) 786-2645.
