June 1, 2006 "10 SECOND ROBBER" ARRESTED Robert D. Grant, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI); Chief Larry Yott of the Palos Heights Police Department; Chief Alan T. Vodicka of the Hickory Hills Police Department; Chief Dennis Olszewski of the Oak Forest Police Department; Chief Charles Ghiloni of the Norridge Police Department and acting Chief Bill Villanova of the Oak Lawn Police Department announced today the arrest of GUILLERMO RIVERA, age 52, whose last known address was in northwest Indiana. RIVERA was arrested last evening, without incident, by FBI Special Agents and officers from the Hickory Hills, Illinois and Valparaiso, Indiana Police Departments inside a residence located at 3105 Black Partridge Lane in Valparaiso. RIVERA was charged in a criminal complaint filed yesterday in U.S. District Court in Chicago with one count of bank robbery, which is a felony offense. According to the complaint, RIVERA, who was nicked named the "10 Second Bandit" by law enforcement agencies, is alleged to have robbed the Palos Bank and Trust in south suburban Palos Heights, Illinois of approximately $2000 on March 29th. The name "10 Second Bandit" came from the habit he had of giving the tellers he was robbing ten seconds to comply with his demand for cash. RIVERA is also a suspect in as many as seven other robberies in the suburban Chicago area and northwest Indiana, since February of this year, although no other charges have been filed. The investigation into these thefts, which is still on-going, is being investigated jointly by the Chicago FBI's Orland Park office and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force. RIVERA was held overnight in the Porter County jail. He is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Hammond, Indiana, later today, for an initial appearance. If convicted of the charges against him, RIVERA faces a possible sentence of up to 20 years incarceration. In announcing this arrest, Mr. Grant wishes to express his appreciation to the FBI's Merrillville office and the Munster and Valparaiso, Indiana Police Departments for their invaluable assistance in this investigation. The public is reminded that a complaint is not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. EDITOR's NOTE: A copy of the complaint filed against RIVERA is available
from the Chicago FBI's Press Office at (312) 829-1199.
